Hometown Pride

I just recently learned that my own town that I grew up in is ranked #2 in The Best Cities That Recycle. Go Fremont!!! I’ve never been more proud of my city. Fresno, CA came in first. I’m amazed that California takes 4 of the top ten spots. Fremont and San Jose rank #1 and #2, respectively, for highest number of households that use recycling programs. And once again, California took 4 of the Top 5 spots for highest number of households. Go California!

My elementary teachers taught us early on to recycle and conserve water. It has stuck with me ever since. And the same mentality goes for other people who were taught well. When I lived in Davis, a neighbor was throwing away his trash without recycling. Unbeknownst to the neighbor, another neighbor was watching… very carefully. One day, the first neighbor found himself with all the cans, glass bottles, and plastic containers he had thrown away lined up neatly in front of his door. What a way to make a statement: You better recycle or the ‘Recycling Bandit’ is gonna getcha!

My man and I do our part in recycling. Hubby had done well with recycling even when I wasn’t living with him. I occasionally chastise him when I see a paper receipt in the garbage and not with the recyclables. Maybe one day I’ll be passive-aggressive, like my Davis neighbor, collect all the paper receipts and line them up on his laptop.

Re-use. Re-cycle.

The Awesomeness of Nine

Well, my favorite number is 9. There are 2 reasons why I love this number.

First Reason: My cousins and I were playing Milton Bradley’s board game “The Game of Life”. When you reach close to the end of the trail, I believe the player has the option to make a final gamble and become the Millionaire Tycoon, thus winning the game. All you had to do was place your car on a number and spin the wheel hoping it would stop on the number you chose. Since I had the least money, I decided to take the gamble and place my car on #9. Guess who won The Game of Life!? (I wish that happened in real life.) That was the only time that ever happened but it was a momentous day in a kid’s life.

Second reason: This number has it’s very own song called “Nine, Nine, Nine”. I first heard it on one of my favorite shows to watch as a kid – SqaureOne TV. It’s one of THE best educational shows EVER and it’s all about math. That’s when I learned that when you multiply any number by 9, you add up the digits of the total (and you keep adding if there is more than one digit) and it ends up being 9! Awesome. Just watch the video and you’ll see for yourself. Catchy little ditty, too.
